Introduced in 1931, the Reverso came about from a purely functional standpoint. It all stemmed from polo playing British officers stationed in India, who complained to the watch importer, César de Trey, that during games, the glass of their wristwatches were often damaged or broken. Realising that this was a genuine problem, he conveyed the message to his supplier Jacques-David LeCoultre. The latter subsequently developed a solution in the form of a wristwatch that had a swivelling face, allowing the case to be flipped over in order to protect the glass. It is unofficially classified as the ‘first sports watch’.
This example features the more desirable black lacquer dial that is completely original and unrestored. The black dial is accented by gold throughout with apple gilt dart arrow markers, a gilt Arabic numeral at 12 o’clock and dot markers at 3 and 9 o’clock. Finishing the dial off, there is a gilt outer minute track, logo and sub-seconds. The stainless steel case measure at 23mm X 38mm with a polished front and sides, and a brushed back.
Overall, this Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso is in remarkable condition considering its age, with the gilt dial offset against the black still standing bright. It is difficult to come across examples in this condition, as many have deteriorated dials.
Viewings can be arranged in Central London by appointment.
